Sir Joshua Reynolds travelled to Italy in 1749 where the "Grand Style" of Raphael and Michelangelo profoundly influenced his art and thought. On his return, he settled in London and soon gained a reputation for his portraits of the celebrities of his day.In 1768, he became the first President of the newly founded Royal Academy.
