MICHELANGELO MERISI, called CARAVAGGIO
John The Baptist, 1598

Ciriaco Mattei gave Caravaggio the order for this painting which he gave to his son, Giovanni Battista, as a present on the occasion of his name-day. It has been said that Johns face looks like Giovannis face.

John hugs a ram instead of a lamb which is difficult to explain, just as his knowing eyes and the premonition of his smile.
