      Henry Stuart, Duke of Gloucester, as a Boy, 1653

 

 
 
The young Duke of Gloucester depicted here in military fashion was appointed to group captain of the Old English infantry regiment of the Spanish army. Side by side with his brother James, Duke of York, he fought in the Spanish Netherlands. When Dunkirchen fell, he escaped by breaking through the enemy lines with the desperate cavalry.
