JAN PREISLER
The Black Lake (Cerné Jezero), 1904

The motive of  a youth and his white horse at a lake surrounded by large rocks reappears several times in the works of Czekian painter Jan Preisler. It emerged for the first time in 1903 with a charcoal drawing on a lecture manuscript.

The final form of this motive was found in two paintings of 1904 which are quite different in respect to the naked rider who is extremely beautiful in this version with a well-shaped body. Today, both versions are regarded as the most important paintings of the black / white phase of Preislers work. In this phase, he mostly contemplated several emotional expressions of sadness, disbelief and melancholy.
