SALVADOR DALI
The Hallucinogenic Torrero, 1970
(Detail)

A child born with the 20th century - what does it observe? This boy stands in the lowermost right corner of the gigantic painting THE HALLUCINOGENIC TORRERO - and his point of view does not allow him the overview of the whole picture. In this respect, he is just like any other boy still learning and not yet entirely able (or allowed) to grasp the whole picture, of understanding the world in the ways of the grown-ups.

Nevertheless, the boy is enchanted, thrilled and in rapture. He is in awe of the approaching gigantic flies from which he does not flee, in awe of the Autogiroflies, of the large and microscopic apparitions of Venus, all those roses and the face of Gala which resembles that of Christ and which stands on the opposite corner of the image - as an echo to the child ...

He witnesses a new world. It is an illusion which has become reality and assumed sensual form, a world of confusion and colourful multiplexity, chaotic and hallucinogenic, and it is the Venus of Milo which would embody the erotic height for any young boy.
